A thirsty desert

As I pulled over and walked toward this scene, the sun lowered in the sky as if it were condemning me to approach the barren landscape, but a single cactus, surrounded by some sticks posing as desert plants called to me.

There the cactus stood in its arid locale, so parched and deprived, but tall and proud like a prisoner of war, fighting against the brutality of the sun. The plants begged for the sun’s forgiveness and slowly shriveled to nearly nothing. Robbed of their moisture, their skeletons remain, encouraging the cactus to thrive and conquer, to hold out against the sun and its almost cloudless back drop and live and prosper in this desolate place.

It’s been one hundred plus days since the dirt has seen even a drop of moisture and it becomes hard and unforgiving, and joins the sun in its effort to rid the desert of life. The heat radiates from it. The only waves the desert will ever see create a plethora of mirages that tease the eye and compel the plant life to succumb to the sun’s demands.

I pull my film camera from my camera bag and introduce it to this harsh atmosphere. The sun’s ray forced through my lens and fell perfectly across the image to capture its dominance over the surrounding environment. The desert, so thirsty, silently howled for rain and I could do nothing to help except document this torture on film.
